Benefits of Tallow
Our ancestors would have had a very clear understanding of what tallow was and its value, as they lived a life closely connected to their food source. Today, we see a return to the use of more natural products and a desire for a less toxic lifestyle. If this is your desire, read on and find out why beef tallow would be an important addition to your life.
Tallow is simply rendered beef fat. Rendering involves cooking the raw fat and turning it into a hot liquid which changes into a solid at room temperature. Grass fed and finished tallow is the highest quality and what Salty Earth Farm uses to create all of its products. Several renderers pick up whatever tallow is available from processors, while we only source our tallow from local farmers that use the highest standards, as that is the only type of product we want to share with our customers.
Tallow is nutrient dense and offers many internal and external benefits. It has been used as skincare for thousands of years and is gaining popularity again with the awakening to the toxicity of skincare products on the market today. Tallow has the ability to protect against environmental damage and free radicals. It has antioxidant properties, which means it can protect the skin from UV damage and even heal the skin that has been damaged. Many people have had success eliminating acne, psoriasis, and eczema by adding tallow to their skincare routine.
It contains:
- Conjugated linoleic acid is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. It is great for dry or aging skin, as it is able to penetrate deeply into the skin’s surface. It hydrates and replenishes moisture while also providing a protective barrier over the skin without clogging pores.
- Palmitoleic acid (Omega 7) which is a foundational component of our skin. Palmitic acid levels become depleted with age. Tallow helps improve the protective layer of our skin, as well as keeping it looking youthful and hydrated.
- Stearic acid helps improve skin’s flexibility and suppleness, creates a protective barrier, and repairs damaged skin.
- Rich in minerals.
- Vitamins A, K, D, E, and B12. Vitamins A, E, K, and D all increase collagen production, improve elasticity, and help the skin to heal.
Consumption of tallow (in the form of our cooking/baking tallow) is far superior to the hydrogenated vegetable oils frequently used. Beef tallow is a healthy fat! It has a smoke point of 400-420 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it excellent for frying, sautéing, and even baking.
*Because each batch of tallow is unique (diet and seasonal variations), products may have certain levels of variability. Natural scented products may have an initial subtle scent of beef that quickly dissipates as the tallow melts into your skin.
